Excerpt:
Washington, DC—A new report from the National Endowment for the Arts presents growing evidence on how arts-based approaches, particularly music, can help to address the opioid crisis. Of the 69 unique studies examined in Arts-Based Approaches to Countering the Opioid Crisis: New and Expanded Evidence, nearly 80 percent reported positive findings while the remainder showed mixed or neutral results. No studies reported uniformly negative findings.
Included with the report is a list of updated statistics about opioid use in the United States.
The report reads:
In conclusion, growing evidence suggests that arts-based approaches—particularly music—can complement opioid misuse prevention, treatment, and recovery efforts and may help reduce pain while improving quality of life, emotional well-being, and readiness for treatment.
Note: The report states that Hope Creates has completed 10 cohorts of Make Your M.A.R.C.®. The correct number is 19 cohorts completed as of September 2026.
